Despite High Spending Why Has Manchester United Had A Trophy-less Run In The Last Five Years
In recent times, Manchester United has competed for five years in all major competitions without winning a single trophy, a rare occurrence that happened 40 years ago. The Red Devils won their last silverware in 2017 under the supervision of Jose Mourinho.
Manchester United is arguably the most decorated team competing in the English Premier League and is known for producing some of the greatest players in the League's history.
However, since the retirement of one of the best club coaches in history, there has been trouble in paradise. It has now become hard to snatch silverware.
Primary Reasons Why The Red Devils Haven't Won a Trophy Since
For one, the club has spent a whopping amount on player transfers that didn't give them a return on investment.
They have spent over half a billion pounds since they last won a trophy, which is far more than Liverpool's spending, who have won more than four trophies in the last four years - this alone shows the club has off-pitch and management issues.
The club has been known to make transfer blunders in recent times, Paul Pogba was purchased for around 105 million euros, and years later, no trophy was won, which begs the question was the transfer worth it?
More so, the fact that the clubs' management offers contracts to players with no potential in an attempt to increase value is also part of their poor performances in recent times.
Furthermore, since Sir Alex Ferguson retired as the clubs' manager, it has purported a "hire and fire policy."
They've hired and fired over four coaches over six years. Which is another primary reason the club has been trophyless.
Jose Mourinho, the club's manager from May 2016 to December 2018, has been the most successful Red Devil coach in the last six years. He helped the team win a trophy, even if it wasn’t one of the biggest trophies won by a successful club, Manchester United.
Conclusion
Clubs go through tough times, especially when a significant change is made in the clubs' management. However, if they can emulate Ferguson's management style, the club might return to its former glory.
